The Hutong School is organizing a trip to Tianjin next Saturday (February 6th). Tianjin is a city very close to Beijing, though it can be interesting to see how different it is from here. Even though it is just a short train ride away, the foods and costums are different. Also, the Tianjin dialect sounds quite different from Beijing dialect.
It is no exaggeration to say that Tianjin bears a splendid and varied historical background. Tianjin was shared by nine countries: Italy, Germany, France, Russia, Great Britain, Austria, Japan and Belgium. This marked an extremely hard period for Tianjin and the people because those imperialist countries left permanent marks in her body, most notable of which were thousands of villas. Today those villas lend an exotic flavor to Tianjin, enhancing the beauty of the entire city. Tianjin is very close to Beijing, which makes it a good desination for a day trip.
We will strall around on Gu Wenhua Jie (Ancient Culture Street), where you can find many things ranging from souvenirs and handicrafts to antiques and food stalls. We can also walk across the Hai River, which flows through Tianjin, and look at the buildings wich were left from European concession. The city has an interesting mixture of traditional Chinese and European architecture, and also has a famous catholic church by the river side. We will also taste the local snacks of Tianjin, which are quite famous throughout China.
We will take an express train that travels at roughly 400km/h and gets to Tianjin in less than 30 minutes.
